AgWise / Rwanda potato / fertilizer recommendation
In collaboration with the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) and CIP, AgWise provided fertilizer recommendations by agroecological zone for potato production for two scenarios:
1. Reduce fertilizer but achieve current yields under blanket level recommendation (300 kg/ha of NPK 17:17:17).
2. Achieve a 20% yield increase over current yield under blanket.
Data was assembled from three field trials and various approaches have been used to derive the results. The “reverse QUEFTS” crop model has been used as well as machine learning with a random forest model. The final outcome recommends six tailored fertilizer packages.
Site-specific fertilizer recommendation for potato in Rwanda
The next step in this case study is to validate the site-specific recommendations on farmers’ fields, assessing their return on investment (ROI) and comparing it to the ROI achieved using the existing blanket recommendations.
